THE STEREO

Note:  This is my all time favorite story from one of my books;  HOLLYWOOD TAXI True Confessions of a kiss and tell driver. 
 
I get a call for an apartment just off Eighth St.  behind the Ambassador hotel (Where Robert Kennedy was shot) I pull up and honk the horn.  Some guy signals me from the fire escape so I pull over and park.


Pretty soon a skinny little brother comes down carrying something heavy in a garment bag.  He very carefully puts it in the trunk. He wants to go to Pasadena.  He’s black, it’s late and it’s a long way.  He looked like he could run so I asked for some money up front.


He didn’t have any.  Imagine that.  He did have a money order he wanted to cash.  We stopped at a drug store but they wouldn’t cash it.  I tell him, no dough, no go. He did have three un-circulated silver dollars encased in plastic and a little portable tape recorder with a re-chargeable battery. (This was when they first came out) I take one of the dollars and the recorder as security.


When we get to Pasadena he has me go down a dark street.  I didn’t like it.  Then he has me park behind another car. Across the street was a gang of young black guys.  Not a good place for a lone white cab driver to be at night.


He gets out and approaches the group. One of them points to the car in front of me.  He goes and gets into it.  Suddenly it starts up and pulls away.  I’m wondering where the hell has he gone and how long will he be gone? If he gives me shit over the waiting time I’ll have a problem.


I’m sitting there alone thinking what kind of fool is he.  I could just drive away. I look at the group.  They’re smoking dope and listening to the radio.  I decide to run a little test.  I start the engine. There is no reaction from them. I roll the cab a little bit.  Nobody notices so I just sorta’ melt away into the night.


Later I get the bag out of the trunk.  It was a stereo and a tape deck.  Along with the recorder and the dollar a good score.  I kept the stuff and paid the fare out of my pocket.


To this day I still chuckle thinking about how his buddies must have laughed when he came back and discovered the cab gone.

Recently I posted an article about some woman who forced a man at knife point to have sex with her.  When he couldn't perform a third time she stabbed him six times.

The post got a lot of response.  I can relate to the situation.  I drove cab at night because of the sex.  More pussy than anything I've ever done in my life.

I did manage to perform three times in one night, thus avoided being stuck.

I've had so much sex in cabs I can only get off in cabs.  Darken motel rooms are not nearly as exciting as the chance of being caught "en flagrant".

Now that I'm older and not driving anymore getting

the girl, the cab and the Viagra co-ordinated is a real

challenge.

Someone in Asbury Park hates trees.

Never have I been in a place that has wacked

down more trees than here.

They cut them down on Cookman and all around Phillips Seaview towers.  Maybe a dozen or more and that doesn't include the ones that went when Sandy came thru here.

I have traveled from Venice Beach in L.A. to Amsterdam in Holland and all the stops in between.  I have been in a lot of towns.  As a traveler you get an overview that locals can't see.

At the risk of offending some I am sad to say the trouble with Asbury Park is it....

.....lacks character

Where are the cobble stone streets, the old oak trees and ivy covered walls? Ocean Grove has character.

At the last election James Keady talked about working with the tourist bureau in Trenton.

Look at your own door step James.  Parking tickets are not inviting, benches in the parks are.

To help save Asbury Park from itself ALF began

a camera candy campaign.

We live in the age of the camera phone.  A virtual blizzard of images.

Why not provide visitors with something to take pictures of...like chalk on the side walk?

It's not illegal.  If it was you'd have to bust kids for doing hopscotch on the sidewalk.

It's safe.  They put chalk down to make something less slippery.

It's not graffiti.  I'm an artist with a six page resume'

and forty six years of experience.

It doesn't cost the city a penny in clean up.  The work disappears by itself.

Best of all it gives the visitor some candy for

their cameras.

On the right, scroll down to the box marked "categories" and click on chalk, then hold the scroll button down and almost everything I've done in AP and NYC will pass by.

The good news is they've come and gone and never caused a problem or cost a penny.

The city is shooting itself in the foot.

Besides the Silver Ball Museum, the kiddie's water park and the miniature golf course there is nothing to make the boardwalk inviting and interesting

except the performers.

IT IS FOOLISH TO RUN OFF THE

 FREE ENTERTAINMENT

They are what give the boardwalk character.

They are more important than some immature, in-adequate summer wanna' be's power trip.

They are drunk on a taste of power.  They foam at the mouth talking about officer's discretion.  Translates if they didn't get laid the night before your guilty of a crime.

To make matters worse they are ignorant of the law.

They are bored.  Their ego's need a victim.

I have informed the city thru

Of my intention to file a

CIVIL RIGHTS COMPLAINT

In four years of being in Asbury Park I have documented (Times, names, dates & places of a consistent pattern of harassment and violations

of my civil rights)

Regrettably this is a harsh step which I would like to

avoid if the following conditions can be met.

They are:

The City of Asbury Park re-affirm that the constitution of the U.S. is in effect in the city

either in writing (e-mail, on camera or registered mail)

Especially as it pertains to the following:

The 1st amendment and freedom of expression.

The right to face my accuser in court.  There have been numerous complaints against me yet the city can not produce a single name.

If I have the right to face my accuser in court there can be no such thing as an anonymous complaint.

How do we know there is a real complaint or is it just something the officer is making up? The Asbury Park police dept has a long and well documented history of creating crime where it doesn't exist as a form of

job security

So NO MORE ANONYMOUS COMPLAINTS.

Here's what should happen.  When I do my performance piece the city stations an officer/observer as a witness for the city.

If a person has a complaint the officer will be there and have witnessed any violation.

If there is a complaint the person is informed that I am a professional performer who has paid a fee and is exercising his right to freedom of expression.

Further inform them that they do not have to look at it.  They can choose to look and/or walk away.

If they still insist on filing a complaint they are welcome to go to the station and do so.

The complaint will be investigated and if found to have merit a summons will be issued and a court date set at which time they will be notified.

(Now the city can't say they didn't know)

The right to due process.  When a summons is issued unless there is an immenit threat the performer is allowed to remain where they are at until such time the matter is appropriately adjudicated before a court of law.

The public has a right to photograph public

servants doing public work in public.

Telling someone not to photograph them is grounds for termination.
