SAM CLAYBERGER

...passed...!!!

May 4, 2018
@ 92

Sam was my teacher/friend/mentor

There is nobody I owe more to than him.

I probably met Sam in 1970.  I think he was my painting instructor.  We clashed from the beginning.  He thought I should put all my colors out on the palette.  The angry young artist wanted to put them out when he was ready.

When I began art school in 1969 there were two art schools next to McArthur Park.  It was the art district. Otis a fine art school and Chouinard a commercially oriented school.  Disney sent his artist there to learn to draw.

Nelly Chouinard the founder was famous for saying.

First day, first lesson you are told that one out of ten is an artist.  The others are here to keep the doors open.

Sam graduated from there and was teaching at Otis when I met him.

After I was terminated from Otis, Sam would take me to Hollywood on Tues nights.  A guy named Cornett Woods ran a drawing workshop for the animators union.  That is where and when I learned to draw.

Sam was also an animator.  He is best known for his work
for J. Ward on the Rocky/Bullwinkle series.

He ran a drawing workshop Tues nights in his studio in the Glassel Park section of L.A.  I met Peter Falk there.

I visited him in Jan. 2015.  To see his studio visit post:
